VAT, GST, and sales tax: key differences

VAT (Value Added Tax) is used in the UK, European Union, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and most other countries. It is a consumption tax applied at each stage of the supply chain, with businesses reclaiming input tax. Standard rates typically range from 5% (UAE) to 25% (Denmark, Sweden, Norway).

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is used in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Canada, and India. It works similarly to VAT but uses different terminology and registration thresholds. Australian GST is 10%; Singapore GST was raised to 9% in January 2024.

US Sales Tax is not a federal VAT — it is a state and local tax applied only at the point of final sale to the consumer, with no input tax credit mechanism. Rates vary by state (0% to 10%+) and often by county and city.
