Belgium VAT (BTW/TVA) Calculator

Calculate Belgian VAT — known as BTW in Dutch and TVA in French — at the standard 21%, reduced 12%, reduced 6%, or zero rate. Belgium has one of Europe's most complex reduced-rate structures, with four tiers that vary by goods category and supply context. VAT rates and rules differ significantly across EU countries; always verify the applicable rate before invoicing.

Formula

Add VAT: Gross = Net × (1 + Rate/100) | Remove VAT: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate/100)

Belgium's VAT uses the same arithmetic as all EU systems. At the standard 21% rate: Net × 1.21 = Gross. To extract the net from a gross price: Gross ÷ 1.21 = Net. At 0%, the gross equals the net.

Worked Example

Scenario: A Brussels agency invoices a UK client €3,500 net for consulting services. Standard Belgian VAT at 21% applies for domestic invoices.

VAT = €3,500 × 21% = €735.00

Gross = €3,500 + €735 = €4,235.00

For B2B cross-border services to a UK-VAT-registered business, the reverse charge mechanism typically applies and no Belgian VAT is charged. Confirm the VAT status of the recipient before invoicing.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing 6% and 12% categories. Belgium's reduced rates are unusually specific. Restaurant meals are 12% (food component), but food sold for home consumption is 6%. The same product category can attract different rates depending on context.
  • Overlooking Belgium's quarterly VAT return obligation. Small Belgian businesses below the €2.5M threshold file quarterly; larger ones file monthly. Missing the filing cycle triggers automatic penalties.
  • Assuming the 0% rate means exempt. Zero-rated and exempt supplies are treated differently for input VAT recovery. Zero-rated supplies allow full input VAT recovery; exempt supplies typically do not. Always clarify which applies.
