Quick example: CHF 5,000 net + 8.1% MWST = CHF 405 VAT = CHF 5,405 gross
CHF

Standard 8.1% for most services. Accommodation 3.8%. Food, medicine, books: 2.6%.

Formula

Add MWST: Gross = Net × (1 + Rate ÷ 100)\nRemove MWST: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)

At 8.1%: Net × 1.081 = Gross; Gross ÷ 1.081 = Net. Never subtract the rate % from a gross — CHF 108.10 − 8.1% gives the wrong answer. Divide by 1.081 instead.

Worked Example

Consulting invoice — 8.1%:

Net CHF 8,000 × 1.081 = CHF 8,648 gross (MWST: CHF 648)

Hotel receipt — 3.8%:

CHF 350 gross ÷ 1.038 = CHF 337.19 net (MWST: CHF 12.81)

Common Mistakes

  • Using EU VAT rates. Switzerland is not in the EU. Swiss MWST has three tiers: 8.1%, 3.8%, and 2.6%. EU rates (Germany 19%, France 20%) do not apply to Swiss domestic transactions.
  • Missing the CHF 100,000 registration threshold. Swiss businesses only need to register for MWST when taxable turnover exceeds CHF 100,000 per year.
  • Subtracting 8.1% to remove MWST. CHF 108.10 − 8.1% = CHF 99.34, not CHF 100. Always divide by 1.081.
