Example: NZ$3,000 net + 15% GST = NZ$3,450 gross · NZ$450 GST

Formula

Add GST: Gross = Net × 1.15 | Remove GST: Net = Gross ÷ 1.15

New Zealand GST at 15% is a single flat rate. Multiply the net price by 1.15 to get the GST-inclusive price. To extract the net from a gross price, divide by 1.15. The GST component is always 3/23 of the GST-inclusive price — a useful fractional check.

Worked Example

Scenario: A New Zealand-registered software company charges a domestic client NZD 3,000 for a software licence. GST at 15% applies.

GST = NZD 3,000 × 15% = NZD 450.00

Gross = NZD 3,000 + NZD 450 = NZD 3,450.00

If the software is supplied to an overseas customer for use outside New Zealand, it may be zero-rated. Confirm with Inland Revenue (IR) before applying zero-rating.

Common Mistakes

  • Treating financial services as zero-rated instead of exempt. In New Zealand, financial services are GST-exempt, not zero-rated. Exempt means no GST is charged and no input tax credits can be claimed on related costs — unlike zero-rated supplies where input credits are recoverable.
  • Missing the NZD 60,000 registration threshold. Businesses must register for GST when their taxable supplies exceed NZD 60,000 in any 12-month period. Non-resident businesses supplying digital services to New Zealand consumers may also need to register.
  • Applying GST to residential rent. Residential property rental is exempt from GST in New Zealand. Charging GST on residential rent is incorrect and must be refunded to tenants. Commercial property rental, however, is standard-rated.
