Finland VAT Calculator (ALV)
Add Finnish ALV to a net price or strip it from a gross total. Standard rate raised from 24% to 25.5% on 1 September 2024 — now the highest standard VAT rate in the EU. Reduced to 14% for food, and 10% for books, medicine, hotel, and passenger transport. Uses EUR.
25.5% for most services (current rate). 14% for food, beverages, restaurants. 10% for books, medicine, hotel, transport, cultural events.
Formula
Add ALV: Gross = Net × (1 + Rate ÷ 100)\nRemove ALV: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)
At 25.5%: Net × 1.255 = Gross; Gross ÷ 1.255 = Net. At 14%: Net × 1.14 = Gross. At 10%: Net × 1.10 = Gross. Never subtract the rate % directly from a gross price.
Worked Example
Helsinki software consultancy — 25.5%:
€20,000 net × 1.255 = €25,100 gross (ALV: €5,100)
Hotel invoice — 10%:
€440 gross ÷ 1.10 = €400 net (ALV: €40)
Common Mistakes
- Using the old 24% rate. Finland raised its standard ALV from 24% to 25.5% on 1 September 2024. Invoices issued from 1 Sep 2024 onwards must use 25.5%. Use the Custom option for pre-September 2024 calculations.
- Finland has the highest standard VAT in the EU. At 25.5%, Finland's standard rate is the highest in the EU (joint with Hungary as of 2024). Budget accordingly for Finnish purchases.
- Medicine is 10%, not exempt. Unlike some EU countries where medicine is zero-rated, Finland charges 10% ALV on pharmaceutical products sold in pharmacies.
- Subtracting the rate % to remove ALV. €125.50 − 25.5% = €93.50. Correct: €125.50 ÷ 1.255 = €100.
