Quick example: €3,000 net + 20% MwSt = €600 VAT = €3,600 gross

Standard 20% for most services. 13% for culture and live events. 10% for food, medicine, books, rent.

Formula

Add MwSt: Gross = Net × (1 + Rate ÷ 100)\nRemove MwSt: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)

At 20%: Net × 1.20 = Gross; Gross ÷ 1.20 = Net. At 10%: Net × 1.10 = Gross; Gross ÷ 1.10 = Net.

Worked Example

B2B invoice — 20%:

€4,200 net × 1.20 = €5,040 gross (MwSt: €840)

Book purchase — 10%:

€28.60 gross ÷ 1.10 = €26.00 net (MwSt: €2.60)

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing Austria and Germany rates. Germany uses 19% standard and 7% reduced. Austria uses 20% standard with 10% and 13% reduced tiers.
  • Subtracting 20% to remove MwSt. €120 − 20% = €96. Correct: €120 ÷ 1.20 = €100.
  • Applying the wrong reduced rate. The 13% rate is for cultural events, live music, wine at wineries. The 10% rate covers food, medicine, books, and residential rent.
