Norway VAT Calculator (MVA)
Add Norwegian MVA to a net price or strip it from a gross total. Standard rate is 25%, reduced to 15% for food and beverages, and 12% for passenger transport, hotel stays, and cinema. Norway is not in the EU — uses NOK, not EUR. Enter any amount to see net, MVA, and gross instantly.
25% for most goods and services. 15% for food and non-alcoholic drinks. 12% for hotel stays, passenger transport, cinema, and sports events.
Formula
Add MVA: Gross = Net × (1 + Rate ÷ 100)\nRemove MVA: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)
At 25%: Net × 1.25 = Gross; Gross ÷ 1.25 = Net. At 15%: Net × 1.15 = Gross. At 12%: Net × 1.12 = Gross. Never subtract the rate % directly from a gross price.
Worked Example
Oslo IT consultancy — 25%:
NOK 50,000 net × 1.25 = NOK 62,500 gross (MVA: NOK 12,500)
Bergen hotel stay — 12%:
NOK 2,240 gross ÷ 1.12 = NOK 2,000 net (MVA: NOK 240)
Common Mistakes
- Norway is not in the EU. Norwegian MVA is governed by Norwegian law, not EU VAT directives. EU reverse-charge rules do not apply between Norway and EU member states in the same way.
- Food rate is 15%, not the same as EU reduced rates. Many EU countries use 5–9% for food. Norway's food rate of 15% is significantly higher.
- Subtracting the rate % to remove MVA. NOK 125 − 25% = NOK 93.75. Correct: NOK 125 ÷ 1.25 = NOK 100.
- Using euros for Norwegian invoices. Norway uses NOK (Norwegian krone), not euros. Norway is EEA but not in the eurozone or EU customs union.
