Formula

Add IVA: Gross = Net × (1 + Rate/100) | Remove IVA: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate/100)

Spain uses the same EU VAT arithmetic. At the standard 21% rate: Net × 1.21 = Gross. To extract the net from a gross price: Gross ÷ 1.21 = Net. At the reduced rate of 10%: Net × 1.10 = Gross.

Worked Example

Scenario: A Madrid marketing agency invoices a domestic client €4,500 net for consulting. Standard IVA at 21% applies.

IVA = €4,500 × 21% = €945.00

Gross = €4,500 + €945 = €5,445.00

Note: Spain applies IVA differently in the Canary Islands (IGIC), Ceuta, and Melilla, where mainland IVA does not apply. Always confirm the delivery location before invoicing.

Common Mistakes

  • Applying mainland IVA to the Canary Islands. The Canary Islands use a separate tax called IGIC (Impuesto General Indirecto Canario) with different rates (standard 7%), not mainland IVA. Invoices to Canary Islands addresses must use IGIC rates, not 21%.
  • Confusing reduced-rate food categories. Spain applies 10% to most food products, but 4% to basic staples such as bread, flour, milk, eggs, fruit, and vegetables. The distinction is enforced and errors can result in underpayment or overpayment of IVA.
  • Missing IRPF withholding on professional invoices. Spanish professional invoices (autónomos, freelancers) typically include an IRPF (income tax) withholding deduction, usually 15%, in addition to IVA. The net payment to the supplier is reduced by this withholding, which the client pays directly to the Agencia Tributaria.
