Formula

Add VAT: Gross = Net × (1 + Rate/100) | Remove VAT: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate/100)

Poland's VAT uses the same arithmetic as all EU systems. At the standard 23% rate: Net × 1.23 = Gross. To extract net from a gross price: Gross ÷ 1.23 = Net. Note that Poland uses PLN (Polish złoty) — convert to EUR if invoicing in euros.

Worked Example

Scenario: A Warsaw logistics firm invoices a UK importer PLN 12,000 net for warehousing services. Standard Polish VAT at 23% applies.

VAT = PLN 12,000 × 23% = PLN 2,760.00

Gross = PLN 12,000 + PLN 2,760 = PLN 14,760.00

Poland uses the Polish złoty (PLN), not the euro. For cross-border invoicing, both parties should agree the invoicing currency in advance. UK businesses may be able to reclaim Polish VAT under the EU 13th Directive — seek specialist advice.

Common Mistakes

  • Poland is an EU member but uses PLN, not euros. Despite being in the EU single market, Poland has not adopted the euro. Polish VAT invoices are typically issued in PLN. Cross-border invoicing in EUR is possible but requires exchange rate treatment.
  • Applying 23% to food. Basic foods in Poland are taxed at 5%, and processed or restaurant food at 8%. The 23% standard rate does not apply to most food categories.
  • Missing Poland's KSeF e-invoicing mandate. Poland is implementing a mandatory National e-Invoicing System (KSeF). The rollout timeline has been adjusted — always check the current implementation dates before setting up Polish invoicing workflows.
