APAC Business FAQs
Which APAC countries use GST?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) as a named system is used in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and India. Australia applies a flat 10%, New Zealand 15%, and Singapore 9% (since January 2024). India's GST is a multi-tier system with rates of 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% depending on the goods or services category. Malaysia replaced GST with SST (Sales and Service Tax) in 2018. Other countries in the region use different consumption taxes: the Philippines uses a 12% VAT, Indonesia uses PPN at 11%, and Thailand uses a 7% VAT. Hong Kong is the major exception — it has no consumption tax on goods or services at all.
How do religious holidays affect APAC working day calculations?
Religious and cultural diversity across APAC means that working day calendars vary more widely than in Europe or North America. Singapore observes multi-faith public holidays covering Chinese (Chinese New Year), Islamic (Hari Raya Puasa and Hari Raya Haji), Hindu (Deepavali), and Christian (Good Friday) traditions — 11 public holidays in total. Indonesia observes holidays for Islam, Hinduism (Nyepi), Buddhism (Waisak), and Christianity, plus state occasions such as Pancasila Day. India's central government gazetted holidays cover festivals across multiple religions, and individual states add their own. Always use the country-specific calculator to get an accurate working day count, especially around Ramadan periods when Indonesian and Malaysian public holidays for Hari Raya Idul Fitri span multiple consecutive days.
Does Indonesia observe Saturday as a working day?
In general, no. The standard Indonesian working week is Monday to Friday for most formal sector employers, with Saturday and Sunday as rest days. However, some industries — particularly manufacturing, retail, and hospitality — operate six-day weeks or shift patterns that may include Saturday. Government and banking sectors follow Monday to Friday. Our Indonesia working days calculator uses the Monday to Friday standard week and excludes the 18 national public holidays. If your counterparty works a six-day week, adjust the working day count accordingly.
What is Songkran and how does it affect Thai working days?
Songkran is the traditional Thai New Year festival, observed annually from 13 to 15 April. It is one of Thailand's most important national holidays and results in three consecutive public holidays. In some years the government extends the Songkran holiday period to create a long weekend, adding 1 to 2 additional bridge days. Because the dates are fixed to the Gregorian calendar (13–15 April), Songkran does not move year to year the way lunar holidays do — but be aware of any official extensions announced each year. Our Thailand working days calculator includes the standard three Songkran days. For deadline planning around mid-April, always allow for a full week of reduced productivity as many businesses and government offices operate on skeleton staffing.
