Frequently Asked Questions

How does US sales tax differ from VAT?

US sales tax is a single-stage tax charged only at the point of final sale to the consumer — businesses do not reclaim it on their own purchases. Value Added Tax (VAT), used in Canada (as GST/HST), Europe, and elsewhere, is a multi-stage tax collected at each step of the supply chain. Businesses registered for VAT reclaim the tax paid on inputs, so the full economic burden falls on the end consumer.

What is the difference between Canadian GST, HST, and PST?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is the 5% federal tax that applies across all of Canada. HST (Harmonised Sales Tax) is a single combined rate used in provinces that have merged their provincial sales tax with the federal GST — Ontario charges 13% HST, while Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island charge 15%. PST (Provincial Sales Tax) is a separate provincial charge collected independently in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. Quebec operates its own QST (Quebec Sales Tax) at 9.975% on top of the 5% GST.

How many working days are in a US year?

A typical US calendar year contains approximately 260–262 working days (Monday through Friday), before deducting federal public holidays. With all 11 federal holidays removed — and assuming none fall on a weekend — the figure is roughly 249–251 working days. Use the US Working Days Calculator to get a precise count for any specific date range.

Do US federal holidays apply in all states?

Federal holidays are mandated for federal employees and federally-chartered banks, but states are free to observe different holidays for state employees and private-sector workers. Several states substitute Indigenous Peoples Day for Columbus Day. Texas observes additional state holidays such as Confederate Heroes Day. Our US Working Days Calculator uses only the 11 official federal holidays.
