Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Egypt have two different working week options?

Egypt operates two distinct working week patterns depending on sector. The official public-sector weekend is Friday–Saturday, reflecting the Islamic tradition of Friday as the day of communal prayer. Many private-sector firms, particularly multinationals and companies integrated with Western markets, operate a Saturday–Sunday weekend instead. The Egypt Working Days Calculator includes a toggle so you can select whichever pattern applies to your counterpart.

How are Sunday holidays handled in South Africa?

Under South Africa's Public Holidays Act, if a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is declared a public holiday in its place. This means that when a holiday lands on Sunday — which is already a non-working day — the working day impact is felt on Monday, not Sunday. A naive calendar count that simply skips Sundays will miss the Monday substitution and overcount working days in affected weeks.

Are Islamic holidays fixed dates in these calculators?

No. Islamic holidays such as Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and the Islamic New Year follow the Hijri (lunar) calendar, which is approximately 11 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar. Their Gregorian dates shift each year and cannot be determined with certainty in advance. Our calculators use confirmed historical dates and the best available advance estimates. For deadline-sensitive planning, always verify current-year Islamic holiday dates with official government announcements.

How does Nigeria's working week compare to Western Europe?

Nigeria follows the same Monday–Friday working week as Western Europe, with Saturday and Sunday as the weekend. The key differences lie in the composition of public holidays. Nigeria's 11 national holidays include Islamic holidays (Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, both observed nationally) alongside Christian holidays and civic commemorations such as Democracy Day and Independence Day. The lunar-based nature of Nigeria's Eid holidays means their Gregorian dates shift annually.

How many public holidays does South Africa have?

South Africa has 12 national public holidays under the Public Holidays Act 36 of 1994. They reflect the country's history and democratic transition: Human Rights Day (21 March), Freedom Day (27 April — first democratic election), Workers' Day (1 May), Youth Day (16 June — 1976 Soweto Uprising), National Women's Day (9 August), Heritage Day (24 September), Day of Reconciliation (16 December), Christmas Day (25 December), Day of Goodwill (26 December), plus New Year's Day, Good Friday, and Family Day (Easter Monday). When a public holiday falls on Sunday, the following Monday is a public holiday.
