Covers New Zealand's national public holidays. Easter-based holidays (Good Friday, Easter Monday) are computed for any year. Matariki (Māori New Year) is approximated as the 3rd Friday of June — the exact date is set by the Waitangi Tribunal each year and may differ. Regional Anniversary Days are not included.
Formula
Working Days = Weekdays − National public holidays falling on weekdays
Count all Monday–Friday days in the range, then subtract New Zealand's 11 national public holidays that fall on weekdays. Regional Anniversary Days vary by region and are not included in this calculator.
Worked Example
Scenario: A New Zealand supplier quotes a 10 working day delivery window starting Tuesday 22 April 2025.
ANZAC Day (25 April) is a Friday — a nationally observed public holiday.
10 working days + 1 holiday (ANZAC Day, Friday) = 11 weekdays forward
Result: delivery window ends 6 May 2025
ANZAC Day always falls on 25 April and is never substituted to another day in New Zealand — even if it falls on a weekend, it is observed as a public holiday on that day.
Common Mistakes
- Overlooking Matariki. Matariki (Māori New Year) became a public holiday in New Zealand in June 2022 — making New Zealand the first country to recognise a Māori holiday at the national level. The date is not fixed: it falls on a Friday in mid-June or early July each year, determined by the lunar calendar. Always verify the date for the specific year.
- Treating the Day after New Year as optional. New Zealand uniquely observes 2 January as a public holiday (Day after New Year's Day). This means New Year gives two consecutive public holidays, not one. Many overseas businesses are unaware of this.
- Ignoring regional Anniversary Days. New Zealand has regional Anniversary Days for each major region (Auckland, Wellington, Otago, etc.). These are widely observed and can affect local suppliers even though they are not national holidays. Not included in this calculator — check employment.govt.nz for regional dates.
