Covers Australian national public holidays computed for any year. Easter-based holidays (Good Friday, Easter Saturday, Easter Monday) are calculated algorithmically. Australia Day observed date is calculated (Mon if 26 Jan falls on a weekend). King's Birthday uses the 2nd Monday of June rule (most states; QLD and WA use different dates — adjust manually if needed). State-specific public holidays are not included.
Formula
Working Days = Weekdays − National public holidays falling on weekdays
Count all Monday–Friday days in the range, then subtract Australian national public holidays that fall on those weekdays. State and territory-specific public holidays are not included — adjust manually if needed.
Worked Example
Scenario: A Sydney supplier quotes 10 working days from Monday 14 April 2025.
Good Friday falls on 18 April 2025, Easter Monday on 21 April, and ANZAC Day on 25 April — three public holidays within a two-week window.
10 working days + 3 public holidays = 13 weekdays forward from 14 April
Result: deadline falls on ~2 May 2025
The Easter–ANZAC window in late April is one of the most holiday-dense periods in Australia. Build significant buffer for any deadlines spanning this period.
Common Mistakes
- Ignoring state-specific public holidays. Each Australian state and territory has its own additional public holidays. For example: Melbourne Cup Day in Victoria, Adelaide Cup Day in SA, picnic day in NT. Check your counterparty's state for locally observed days.
- Using the wrong King's Birthday date. The King's Birthday public holiday is observed on the 2nd Monday of June in most states, but Queensland observes it on the last Monday of October and Western Australia uses the 4th Monday of September. Adjust if your counterparty is in QLD or WA.
- Overlooking the Easter Saturday holiday. Easter Saturday is a public holiday in some states (e.g. NSW, Victoria, SA) but not all. If it falls on a weekday, it may affect your count depending on the relevant state.
