State-level and bank holidays vary significantly across India's 28 states and 8 union territories — the actual number of non-working days for any business can range from 14 to 25+ per year. Lunar-based dates are from approximate annual override tables.

Formula

Working Days = Weekdays − Central government gazetted holidays falling on weekdays

Count all Monday–Friday days in the range, then subtract India's central government gazetted public holidays that fall on weekdays. Three are mandatory national holidays (Republic Day, Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti). State holidays and regional festivals are not included.

Worked Example

Scenario: A Bengaluru tech vendor quotes a 10 working day delivery window starting Monday 13 October 2025.

Diwali (Laxmi Puja) falls on Tuesday 21 October and the second day on Wednesday 22 October — two consecutive national holidays within the window.

10 working days + 2 Diwali holidays = 12 weekdays forward

Result: deadline falls on 27 October 2025

The Diwali–Dussehra festival season (October–November) is one of the most commercially active but also most holiday-dense periods in India. Build adequate buffer into contracts spanning this window.

Common Mistakes

  • Treating central government holidays as universal. India has 3 mandatory national holidays; all others vary by state, employer, and sector. A Mumbai financial services firm, a Chennai manufacturer, and a Delhi government office may observe completely different days off. Always confirm the specific holiday calendar with your counterparty.
  • Using fixed dates for lunar festivals. Holi, Diwali, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and several other major Indian holidays follow lunar or lunisolar calendars. Their Gregorian dates shift each year. Approximate dates are used in this calculator — verify at india.gov.in for precision.
  • Overlooking second-Saturday closures. Many Indian companies — particularly in the private sector — follow a practice of closing on the second and fourth Saturday of each month in addition to Sundays. This is not a statutory requirement but is common in IT, banking, and professional services. A 5-day working week assumption may overcount working days for these firms.
