Covers Switzerland's most widely observed national holidays. Easter-based holidays are computed algorithmically. Each of the 26 cantons adds 1–3 additional cantonal holidays not included here — verify for your specific canton.

Formula

Working Days = Weekdays − Swiss public holidays falling on weekdays

Count all Monday–Friday days in the range, then subtract Swiss national public holidays on weekdays. Cantonal holidays are not included — check the official cantonal calendar for your location.

Worked Example

Scenario: 15-day project starting Monday 28 Apr 2025 in Zurich.

Ascension Day (29 May) and Whit Monday (9 June) fall outside the 15-day window here.

Weekdays 28 Apr – 16 May: 15 • National holidays in window: 0

Completion: Friday 16 May 2025

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring cantonal holidays. Each of Switzerland's 26 cantons adds 1–3 further public holidays beyond the national list.
  • Missing Berchtoldstag. 2 January is observed in most German-speaking cantons, effectively extending New Year to a 2-day break.
  • Overlooking Auffahrt (Ascension). Ascension always falls on a Thursday. Many Swiss businesses also take the following Friday off as a bridge day.
