Volumetric Weight vs Chargeable Weight

Carriers do not always bill on the weight your scale shows. This guide explains volumetric (dimensional) weight, how it is compared with actual weight to give the chargeable weight you actually pay for, which divisor applies, and how to stop light, bulky cargo from costing more than it should.

Actual, volumetric and chargeable weight

  • Actual (gross) weight — what the shipment weighs on a scale, packaging included.
  • Volumetric (dimensional) weight — a weight derived from the space the shipment occupies, using a divisor.
  • Chargeable weight — the higher of the two. Carriers bill on this so that light, bulky cargo pays for the space it takes.

The volumetric weight formula

Volumetric weight (kg) =

length (cm) × width (cm) × height (cm) ÷ divisor

Chargeable weight =

the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight

If you already have volume in CBM, multiply CBM by 1,000,000 to get cubic centimetres before dividing by the divisor, or use a CBM-based factor your carrier specifies.

Which divisor applies

The divisor is set by the carrier and mode, not by a universal rule. Widely used assumed values include:

  • Air freight (assumed 6000): 1 CBM treated as roughly 167 kg.
  • Courier / express (assumed 5000): 1 CBM treated as roughly 200 kg.
  • Road and sea LCL: vary by carrier and are often quoted on CBM directly.

These divisors are assumptions to illustrate the method. No single divisor is universal — always use the divisor stated on your own quote or contract.

Worked example

Illustrative figures using an assumed air-freight divisor of 6000.

Carton: 80 × 60 × 50 cm240,000 cm³
Volumetric weight (÷ 6000)40 kg
Actual weight28 kg
Chargeable weight (higher of the two)40 kg

Here the cargo is light but bulky, so you pay on 40 kg. If the carton weighed 55 kg, you would pay on the 55 kg actual weight instead.

Before you calculate: checklist

  • Outer dimensions of each carton, in a consistent unit.
  • Actual (gross) weight per carton.
  • The divisor stated on your carrier quote or contract.
  • The number of cartons, if calculating a whole shipment.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming you always pay on actual weight.
  • Applying a courier divisor to an air-freight quote, or vice versa.
  • Comparing actual weight against volume in CBM without converting units.
  • Ignoring packaging that inflates outer dimensions.

Assumptions and limitations

Divisors differ between carriers, services and contracts, and some quote sea LCL on CBM rather than a derived weight. The values in this guide are assumptions to show the method, not fixed rates. Always confirm the divisor that applies to your shipment.
