How to Calculate CBM (Cubic Metre Volume) for a Shipment

CBM (cubic metres) is how carriers measure the space your cargo occupies. This guide gives the CBM formula, shows how to convert centimetres and inches, works a full example for identical and mixed cartons, and lists what to gather before you calculate.

What CBM means and why it matters

CBM stands for cubic metre — the volume of space one metre wide, one metre deep and one metre tall. Sea and air carriers price partial loads on the space cargo occupies, so your CBM total drives LCL (less-than-container-load) sea quotes, decides how many cartons fit a container, and feeds the volumetric weight that air and courier carriers bill on.

The CBM formula

CBM per carton =

length (m) × width (m) × height (m)

Total CBM =

CBM per carton × number of cartons

For cartons of different sizes, calculate CBM for each carton type separately and add the results. Measure the outer packed dimensions, not the product inside.

Converting centimetres and inches

  • Centimetres: divide each dimension by 100 before multiplying, or divide the multiplied total by 1,000,000.
  • Inches: multiply each dimension by 0.0254 to get metres, or divide the multiplied total (in cubic inches) by 61,024.
  • Millimetres: divide each dimension by 1,000.

Worked example: identical and mixed cartons

The dimensions below are illustrative. Use your own measured carton sizes.

Identical cartons. 60 cm × 40 cm × 30 cm, 50 cartons.

Before you calculate: checklist

  • Outer packed dimensions of each carton type (length, width, height).
  • The unit of measurement (cm, mm or inches) — kept consistent.
  • The number of cartons of each type.
  • Actual (gross) weight per carton, for the chargeable-weight comparison later.
  • Whether cartons can be stacked, if you will plan container loading.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing units — measuring one dimension in cm and another in inches.
  • Using the product size instead of the outer carton size.
  • Dividing by 100 once instead of converting all three dimensions.
  • Forgetting to add pallet dimensions when goods ship palletised.

Assumptions and limitations

CBM measures volume only. It does not tell you the chargeable weight, and it does not guarantee that cargo will physically fit a given container — real loading depends on stacking rules, pallet footprints and weight limits. Treat CBM as one input, not the whole freight picture.
