Formula
Import Duty = Customs Value × Duty Rate ÷ 100 | (ad valorem)
An ad valorem duty is calculated as a percentage of the customs value. Most import tariffs use this method. Some commodities attract specific duties (fixed per unit or per kg) or compound duties (ad valorem plus specific). The duty rate is found in the importing country's tariff schedule against the commodity HS code.
Worked Example
Electronics shipment: Customs value USD 10,000 · Duty rate 5%:
Import duty = USD 10,000 × 5% = USD 500
Total (goods + duty) = USD 10,000 + USD 500 = USD 10,500
In practice, the customs authority determines the dutiable value, which may differ from invoice value. Freight and insurance costs are typically included in CIF customs value. Use the Customs Value Calculator to compute CIF value before applying the duty rate.
