Covers Ecuador's 12 national public holidays. Good Friday is Easter-based and computed for any year. Carnival dates are approximate annual overrides.
Formula
Working Days = Weekdays − National public holidays falling on weekdays
Count all Monday–Friday days in the range, then subtract Ecuadorian national holidays. Ecuador applies a shifting rule under the Labour Code: when a fixed-date holiday falls on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, it may be moved to the nearest Monday or Friday by executive resolution. Dates are computed using official rules for each year.
Worked Example
Scenario: A Quito supplier quotes a 10 working day lead time starting Monday 27 October 2025.
All Souls' Day falls on Sunday 2 November — no weekday deduction. Independence of Cuenca falls on Monday 3 November — one weekday holiday within the window.
10 working days + 1 holiday (3 Nov) = 11 weekdays forward
Result: deadline falls on 11 November 2025
Note that All Souls' Day (2 November, Sunday) does not create a weekday deduction in 2025. However, some Ecuadorian businesses close informally on Monday 3 November for the combined observance. Confirm directly with your supplier.
Common Mistakes
- Conflating Ecuador's three independence dates. Ecuador has three distinct independence commemorations: First Cry of Independence (10 August 1809, Quito), Independence of Guayaquil (9 October 1820), and Independence of Cuenca (3 November 1820). All three are national public holidays. Teams unfamiliar with Ecuador often expect only one independence day — missing two additional working day losses in October and November.
- Missing the October–November cluster. Three holidays fall within 26 days in late October / early November: Independence of Guayaquil (9 Oct), All Souls' Day (2 Nov), and Independence of Cuenca (3 Nov). In years when these fall on weekdays, this period loses up to three working days. Plan supply chains and payment deadlines carefully around this cluster.
- Ignoring the Labour Code shifting rule. Ecuador's Labour Code allows fixed-date holidays falling mid-week to be shifted to the nearest Monday or Friday by executive resolution. This applies to some (but not all) holidays. Always verify with official Ecuadorian government sources for future years.
