Covers Chile's 16 national public holidays. Easter-based holidays (Good Friday, Holy Saturday) are computed for any year. National Unity Day uses the 3rd Monday of June rule.

Formula

Working Days = Weekdays − National holidays falling on weekdays

Count all Monday–Friday days in the range, then subtract Chilean national holidays that fall on those weekdays. Chile has 16 public holidays, including Holy Saturday, election days, and National Unity Day (3rd Monday of June). September and October are the most holiday-dense months.

Worked Example

Scenario: A Santiago firm quotes a 10 working day window starting Thursday 18 September 2025.

Independence Day (18 Sep) and Army Day (19 Sep) immediately consume the first two days.

10 working days + 2 Fiestas Patrias holidays = 12 weekdays forward

Result: deadline falls on 3 October 2025

In practice, many Chilean businesses treat the entire Fiestas Patrias week as a holiday period, particularly when 18–19 September fall on Thursday–Friday or Monday–Tuesday. Build a full-week buffer around Fiestas Patrias for critical deadlines.

Common Mistakes

  • Underestimating Fiestas Patrias. Independence Day (18 Sep) and Army Day (19 Sep) are back-to-back national holidays, and Chilean businesses frequently extend to a full week especially when these fall mid-week. The Chilean government often officially declares the surrounding days as non-working "bridge" days (días puentes). September is the single most disrupted month for business in Chile.
  • Missing Holy Saturday as a public holiday. Unlike most countries, Chile designates Holy Saturday (the day before Easter Sunday) as a public holiday in addition to Good Friday. This means Chile loses two consecutive working days during the Easter period rather than just one, which is frequently overlooked by non-Chilean schedulers.
  • Forgetting election days. Chilean national election days are designated as public holidays. This is a mandatory public holiday in Chile — it is legally required for employers to give workers the day off to vote. Check the Chilean electoral calendar each year for election dates.
