Covers Kenya's public holidays. Good Friday and Easter Monday are computed for any year. Eid al-Adha is an approximate date from annual override tables. When a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is observed.

Formula

Working Days = Weekdays − National public holidays falling on weekdays

Count all Monday–Friday days in the range, then subtract Kenyan national public holidays that fall on those weekdays. If a holiday falls on Sunday, Monday is observed as the holiday. Eid al-Adha is approximate — confirm the official date from the Kenya government gazette each year.

Worked Example

Scenario: A Nairobi supplier quotes a 10 working day delivery window starting Monday 8 December 2025.

Jamhuri Day (12 December, Friday) falls within the window — one weekday holiday.

10 working days + 1 Jamhuri Day = 11 weekdays forward

Result: deadline falls on 23 December 2025

December is Kenya's busiest holiday cluster: Jamhuri Day (12 Dec) and Christmas (25 Dec) are both within the month. Budget extra lead time for any deadline falling in the second half of December.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a fixed date for Eid al-Adha. Kenya observes Eid al-Adha (Idd ul-Adha) as a national public holiday. The date follows the Islamic lunar calendar and shifts by approximately 10–11 days each year. The approximate date shown is based on astronomical calculations — the official date is confirmed by the Kenya government gazette following the sighting of the new crescent moon. Always verify before planning deadlines around late May or early June.
  • Missing Huduma Day. Huduma Day (10 October) was established in 2019. It is a relatively new addition to the Kenyan calendar and is absent from many older holiday databases and generic calculators. Any timeline spanning early to mid-October in Kenya must account for this holiday.
  • Confusing Madaraka Day and Jamhuri Day. Kenya has two major national days: Madaraka Day (1 June) marks internal self-governance in 1963, and Jamhuri Day (12 December) marks full independence and the declaration of a republic. Both are national public holidays. Teams unfamiliar with Kenya sometimes account for only one independence-related holiday.
