Covers Spain's 10 nationwide public holidays. Each autonomous community adds 1–2 additional regional holidays not included here. Good Friday is computed algorithmically for any year.

Formula

Working Days = Weekdays − National public holidays falling on weekdays

Count all Monday–Friday days in the range, then subtract any of Spain's national public holidays that fall on those weekdays. Regional community and municipal holidays are not included here.

Worked Example

Scenario: A Madrid supplier quotes 10 días hábiles (working days) delivery from Monday 29 September 2025.

National Day of Spain falls on Sunday 12 October 2025 — a weekend — so no adjustment is needed for this holiday in this range.

10 working days, no national holidays on weekdays in range

Result: deadline falls on ~13 October 2025

Note: Spain does not observe a substitute holiday when a public holiday falls on a weekend. If the National Day had fallen on a weekday, it would reduce the working day count by one.

Common Mistakes

  • Missing regional (autonómico) holidays. Each of Spain's 17 autonomous communities adds up to 2 extra public holidays. Madrid observes 2 May (Madrid Community Day) and 15 May (San Isidro). Catalonia observes 23 April (Sant Jordi) and 11 September (Diada Nacional). A national calculation will miss these days.
  • Spain's December holiday cluster. Spain has three national holidays in December: Constitution Day (6 Dec), Immaculate Conception (8 Dec), and Christmas Day (25 Dec). Combined with regional additions, the first two weeks of December can lose 3–4 working days depending on the community. Budget extra lead time for December deliveries.
  • No substitute holiday rule. Unlike the UK, Spain does not move a public holiday to the following Monday when it falls on a weekend. The holiday is simply lost. This means the actual number of working-day reductions per year varies — in years when more national holidays fall on weekends, workers get fewer effective holiday days.
