Roofing Calculator
Estimate roofing area and materials needed for your project. Enter roof length, width, pitch, and waste allowance to calculate total roofing material required.
Enter roof dimensions and pitch to calculate total roofing area needed, including waste allowance.
Formula
Horizontal Area = Length × Width | Roofing Area = Horizontal Area × Pitch Factor | Total = Roofing Area × (1 + Waste%)
Roof pitch increases the actual surface area compared to horizontal projection. Pitch factor accounts for this slope. Waste allowance covers overlaps, cuts, and installation variations.
Worked Example
60 ft × 40 ft roof with 6/12 pitch and 15% waste allowance.
Horizontal area = 60 × 40 = 2,400 sq ft
Pitch factor for 6/12 = 1.118
Roofing area = 2,400 × 1.118 = 2,683.2 sq ft
With 15% waste = 2,683.2 × 1.15 = 3,085.7 sq ft
Order approximately 3,086 sq ft of roofing material to account for the pitch and waste.

Roof pitch reference table
| Pitch (rise/run) | Angle | Pitch Factor | Common Usage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3/12 | 14° | 1.075 | Low-slope / flat roofs |
| 4/12 | 18° | 1.054 | Low-slope residential |
| 5/12 | 23° | 1.087 | Standard residential |
| 6/12 | 27° | 1.118 | Common residential |
| 8/12 | 34° | 1.202 | Steeper residential |
| 10/12 | 40° | 1.302 | Very steep residential |
| 12/12 | 45° | 1.414 | Very steep / steep gable |
Pitch factors are used to calculate actual roof surface area from horizontal projection. Higher pitch = steeper slope = larger surface area.
