Formula

Volume (yd³) = Area (sq ft) × Depth (inches) ÷ 324 | Bags Needed = Volume × Bags per Cubic Yard

Convert area and depth to cubic yards using standard conversion (1 yd³ = 27 cubic feet or 324 inches of depth over 1 sq ft). Multiply by standard bag density for your mulch type, typically 13.5 two-cubic-foot bags per yard.

Worked Example

Garden bed: 100 ft × 50 ft, 2 inches deep, standard hardwood mulch (13.5 bags/yd³).

Area = 100 × 50 = 5,000 sq ft

Volume = 5,000 × 2 ÷ 324 = 30.86 cubic yards

Bags = 30.86 × 13.5 = 416.6, round up to 417 bags

Order approximately 31 cubic yards or 417 two-cubic-foot bags of mulch.
