Gravel Calculator
Calculate gravel volume and weight needed for landscaping or construction. Get accurate material estimates in cubic yards and tons.
Enter area dimensions (or direct square footage) and depth to calculate gravel volume and weight needed.
Formula
Volume (yd³) = Area (sq ft) × Depth (inches) ÷ 324 | Weight (tons) = Volume × Density
Convert area and depth to cubic yards. A standard cubic yard of earth or gravel is 27 cubic feet or 324 inches of depth over 1 sq ft. Multiply by density to get total weight for transportation and delivery estimates.
Worked Example
Driveway: 100 ft × 50 ft, 2 inches deep, crushed limestone (1.4 tons/yd³).
Area = 100 × 50 = 5,000 sq ft
Volume = 5,000 × 2 ÷ 324 = 30.86 cubic yards
Weight = 30.86 × 1.4 = 43.2 tons
Order approximately 31 cubic yards or 43 tons of limestone gravel.
