Formula
Add VAT: Gross = Net × 1.15 | Remove VAT: Net = Gross ÷ 1.15
Saudi Arabia VAT at 15% uses the standard VAT arithmetic. Multiply the net price by 1.15 to get the VAT-inclusive price. To extract the net from a VAT-inclusive amount, divide by 1.15. The VAT component is always the difference between gross and net.
Worked Example
Scenario: A Riyadh-based IT vendor invoices a client SAR 20,000 for software licences. Saudi VAT at 15% applies.
VAT = SAR 20,000 × 15% = SAR 3,000.00
Total = SAR 20,000 + SAR 3,000 = SAR 23,000.00
At 15%, Saudi Arabia VAT is three times the UAE rate and comparable to many European VAT rates. Businesses moving between UAE and Saudi Arabia operations frequently miscalculate by applying the wrong country's rate — always confirm the supply location before applying a rate.
Common Mistakes
- Using the old 5% rate. Saudi Arabia raised its VAT rate from 5% to 15% on 1 July 2020. Any calculation using 5% for Saudi Arabia is applying the pre-July 2020 rate and will significantly understate VAT owing. The current standard rate is 15%.
- Confusing UAE and Saudi VAT rates. The UAE and Saudi Arabia both introduced VAT in January 2018 at 5%. Saudi Arabia then raised its rate to 15% while the UAE kept its at 5%. This is the single most common rate error for businesses operating across both markets — always confirm which country's rate applies to each supply.
- Missing e-invoicing (FATOORAH) requirements. Saudi Arabia has implemented mandatory electronic invoicing (FATOORAH) in phases since December 2021, administered by ZATCA. All VAT-registered businesses in Saudi Arabia must issue e-invoices in the ZATCA-approved format. Standard PDF invoices alone are no longer sufficient for VAT compliance in Saudi Arabia.
