Covers Ireland's 10 bank holidays. Floating bank holidays (St Brigid's Day, May/June/August/October bank holidays) are computed as first/last Monday of the relevant month. Easter Monday is computed algorithmically.
Formula
Working Days = Weekdays − Public holidays falling on weekdays
Count all Monday–Friday days in the range, then subtract any Irish public holidays that fall on those weekdays. Several Irish holidays are floating (first or last Monday of the month) — the dates are computed for each year.
Worked Example
Scenario: A Dublin tech company agrees a 20 working day delivery milestone starting Monday 10 March 2025.
St. Patrick's Day (17 March) falls on a Monday — a weekday — and counts as one excluded holiday.
20 working days + 1 public holiday = 21 weekdays forward
Result: deadline falls on ~8 April 2025
St. Patrick's Day is a national holiday that also closes Irish banks and many UK offices with Irish operations. Plan international handoffs around this date.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing Republic of Ireland with Northern Ireland holidays. Northern Ireland is part of the UK and observes UK bank holidays, including 12 July (Orangemen's Day in some areas). The Republic observes St. Patrick's Day, Easter Monday, and October Bank Holiday that Northern Ireland does not share in the same way.
- Missing floating bank holidays. Ireland has four floating bank holidays tied to the first or last Monday of specific months (May, June, August, October). These dates shift each year. Always use the current year's actual dates.
- Overlooking St. Brigid's Day. St. Brigid's Day (first Monday of February) was introduced as a new Irish public holiday in 2023. It may not appear on older holiday lists or templates.
