Formula
Referral Fee = Selling Price × (Referral Fee Rate ÷ 100) | Total Amazon Fees = Referral Fee + FBA Fee + Storage Cost + Closing Fee + Ad Cost | Net Revenue = Selling Price − Total Amazon Fees | Effective Fee % = (Total Amazon Fees ÷ Selling Price) × 100
Amazon charges multiple fees: a referral fee percentage (varies by category), FBA fulfillment charges, storage fees (especially during peak seasons), optional closing fees in some categories, and any advertising costs. The effective fee percentage shows what portion of your selling price goes to all Amazon fees combined.
Worked Example
Seller lists a product at $50 on Amazon with typical FBA fees:
Referral fee (15%) = $50 × 15% = $7.50
FBA fulfillment fee = $5.00
Storage cost = $0.00
Advertising allocation = $1.00
Total fees = $7.50 + $5.00 + $1.00 = $13.50
Net revenue = $50 − $13.50 = $36.50
Effective fee rate = ($13.50 ÷ $50) × 100 = 27%
Remember to subtract your cost of goods sold (COGS) from net revenue to calculate actual profit per unit. If COGS is $15, profit = $36.50 − $15 = $21.50 per unit.

When to use this calculator
- →Calculating net revenue from an Amazon sale after all seller fees and FBA costs
- →Estimating profit per unit by deducting all fees from selling price, then COGS from net revenue
- →Setting selling prices to achieve your target profit margin after Amazon's total fee burden
- →Modeling the impact of different fee scenarios (high vs. low referral fee categories, FBA vs. seller-fulfilled)
Common mistakes to avoid
- ✕Forgetting to include FBA fees when calculating profitability — they can add 10–20% to total costs
- ✕Not accounting for storage fees during peak season (Oct–Dec) which can significantly impact margin
- ✕Ignoring advertising costs — ACoS (advertising cost of sale) can eat 15–30% of profit
- ✕Using wrong category referral fees — always check your actual category in Seller Central
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between referral fees and FBA fees?
Referral fees are a percentage of the sale price charged by Amazon for using their marketplace. FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon) fees are separate charges for warehousing, picking, packing, shipping, and returns handling. You pay referral fees whether you use FBA or not. FBA fees only apply if you use their fulfillment service.
How much are typical Amazon referral fees?
Referral fees vary by category. Most categories charge 15%, but some are higher (books, movies, music DVDs at 45%) or lower (electronics, sporting goods at 8–10%). Check your specific category in Seller Central for exact rates.
What is included in the FBA fee?
FBA fees cover fulfillment (picking and packing), shipping to the customer, customer returns processing, and customer service. The fee depends on the product size and weight. Larger, heavier items cost more to fulfill. FBA fees are calculated per unit, not as a percentage.
When do I pay storage fees?
Amazon charges monthly storage fees year-round for inventory stored in their fulfillment centers. Long-term storage fees apply to items in stock for more than 365 days. Peak season storage fees (Oct–Dec) are higher than standard rates. Selling inventory quickly minimizes storage costs.
Should I factor all fees into my pricing?
Yes. Calculate all fees (referral, FBA, storage, advertising) and add them to your COGS. Then add your desired profit margin. If COGS is $15 and total fees are $13.50, you need to charge enough to cover all costs and profit.
How do I reduce Amazon fees?
Focus on fast inventory turnover to avoid storage fees. Optimize ad spend to get better ACOS (advertising cost of sale). In some categories, seller-fulfilled options may have lower fees, but you lose Prime eligibility and convenience. Always verify current fee structures in Seller Central.
